Country’s fisheries production can reach 16 MMT by 2019


New Delhi. Recommending doubling the budgetary provision for the development and management of the fisheries sector, the industrial organization Assocham has said that by the year 2019, the country’s fisheries production can reach 16 MMT (million metric tons). The organization has suggested that the government should formulate policies to increase this production and to achieve a growth rate of eight per cent per annum.

Fisheries in India: Prospects and Potentials; According to a study named Reference State-West Bengal, ‘Due to the efforts of the government, there have been significant changes in the processing sector. The figures in the domestic segment in the raw and processed fisheries sector can reach Rs 1.5 lakh crore by the year 2020. In the next 4-5 years, the business in the domestic market can cross Rs 61 lakh crore.

The study says, “By the year 2020, there is a need to make a plan to reach this sector with exporters to two lakh crore rupees.”
